Rice Road Greenhouses and Garden Centre
Rice Road Greenhouses and Garden Centre sells a variety of annual, perennial, tropical, and pond plants, some of which are grown in their own greenhouses. This site is currently in the process of implementing two green initiatives. In the greenhouses, biological pest control is replacing chemical pest control. In the garden centre, a single stream recycling program is being introduced to encourage shoppers to recycle.

Booking a visit: Visiting the garden centre does not require a booking. However, if you have a large class, you may wish to call ahead to inform the centre that you will be coming through as a courtesy to the store.
Programs Offered: The garden centre does not offer programming, but there are still opportunities for an awesome learning experience for your students. Here are 5 options for making the most of your visit. 1) You could teach your students the parts of a flower and their purpose using living examples. 2) You could explain what it means to be an annual, perennial, or biennial plant then move though the different sections of the centre to allow students to see the differences between them. 3) You could look at the care instruction tags on a variety of plants and discuss the unique needs of different plants. This could link to a discussion of why certain plants often occur together to form habitats. 4) You could introduce your students to the idea of gardening hardiness zones and how to choose plants that are appropriate for our region. This could link to a discussion on native plants. 5) You could take your students to the vegetable section to explore the kinds of vegetables we can grow in our region and teach them about growing their own vegetable gardens (space requirements, growth requirements, etc). This could link to a discussion of the local food movement.
In addition to learning about plants, a visit to Rice Road Greenhouses and Garden Centre is an opportunity to show your students green gardening and business in action. Click here to learn more about the green initiatives currently in operation at the site.
